ADOLF SCHERBAUM

I first met Adolf Scherbaurn in November 1951 in my parents' home in London. Adolf was visiting England with the NDR Symphony Orchestra. I remember the concert in the Royal Festival Hall, conducted by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, which included the first public performance in England of the Concert Music for Strings and Brass by Hindemith. I was very impressed with the playing of the brass section. (Incidentally, I recorded this piece with my own ensemble some 30 years later!)

Our first meeting in London led to a visit to Hamburg where I spent a few days studying with Adolf trying to adapt his ideas to my own style of playing. Later, in 1960, when I was solo trumpet of London's Philharmonia Orchestra, I was able to invite him to record the Brandenburg Concerto no. 2 with our solo players under the baton of Otto Klemperer. By this time he was the most famous trumpet player in Europe for the performance of the very high-lying baroque trumpet parts of Bach and other composers of the period. It is said that Maurice Andre, one of the finest trumpet soloists of the 20th century, was inspired to develop his own talents in this direction through hearing the playing of Adolf - surely one of the greatest compliments that he could receive.

In 1961 I had the pleasure of playing with him in Handel's Water Music with the
Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under Karl Münchinger at the Menton Festival in
France.

Much later he came to one of my brass ensemble concerts in Nürnberg when I was on tour in Germany. At the party after the concert we were talking together and he offered to teach me his 'new' method of playing. I thanked him for his kind intentions, but as I was by then considering retiring frorn trumpet playing, I never took up the offer.

Adolf enjoyed a wonderful career, setting new standards as a trumpet soloist, especially in the baroque era of music. With his ebullient style of living and playing this warm-hearted musician gave us all a fine example to follow.

I send him my warmest greetings in his 90th year.
