7.2 The Consequences for the Fishing Industry

The contamination of fish and shellfish was not only an environmental tragedy, but also badly affected the fishing industry in the area, one of Pembroke's main industries, along with tourism, agriculture and the oil industry. Fishermen lost their jobs, as fishing was prohibited. It is reported that this may have damaged some fishing companies for more than six years. Obviously personal hardship for individual fishermen and companies has been the result.53
